People of Faith Respect ABQ Women

New Mexico has a history of trusting women to make the personal and complex decision to end a pregnancy – with their families, their faith, and their doctors. As one of the allied organizations working on the Respect ABQ Women campaign, the NM Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice has proudly brought support of local faith leaders from diverse backgrounds to stand with the women and families of Albuquerque. We believe that the deeply personal and complex decision to have an abortion needs to remain solely with a woman -- and if she chooses, in consultation with her family, and her doctor, without government interference.

While the Faith Leaders and Communities who have endorsed the campaign are religiously and theologically diverse, they are unified in their reverence for each woman’s autonomy and agency, and believe that it is not the place of government to force any one particular reproductive health decision upon any woman.

Further, as people of good faith from varying religious traditions, they embrace both the ambiguity about when life begins and still agree to respect every woman’s right to make decisions according to her own beliefs and conscience. Codifying the ideological
viewpoint of a few into public law undermines the validity and religious freedom of others.
